Why Cooking Rice Is So Important in Asia
In Asia, cooking rice is one of the most important parts of making a meal.
Rice is a staple food and the starting point of most meals.
Before preparing the main dishes, the very first thing people do is wash the rice, soak it, and cook it.
This step is considered the most important.
If the rice is undercooked, overcooked, too dry, or too wet and mushy, people often say,
“The rice didn’t turn out well.”
Even if the main dishes are delicious, poorly cooked rice can affect the entire meal.
That’s how important rice is in Asian cuisine.

How to Wash Rice
1. Measure the rice.
Measure the amount of rice you want to cook using a rice cup.

2. Rinse the rice quickly.
Put the rice in a bowl and add cold water.
Gently swirl the rice with your hand and drain the water immediately.
(The first rinse should be quick because rice absorbs water fast.)

3. Wash the rice gently.
Add fresh water again and gently rub the rice with your fingers.
Do not press too hard. This helps remove excess starch.
4. Repeat 2–3 times.
Rinse and drain the water until it becomes slightly cloudy, not completely clear.

5.Drain the rice well.
After washing, drain the rice completely before cooking.

How to Cook Rice Using a Rice Cooker

Add water using a 1:1 ratio — one cup of rice to one cup of water. - Place the pot in the rice cooker.
Wipe the outside of the inner pot so it is dry, then place it into the rice cooker. - Close the lid and start cooking.
Close the lid and press the “Cook” or “White Rice” button. - Let the rice rest.
When cooking is finished, let the rice sit on “Warm” for about 10 minutes. - Fluff the rice.
Gently fluff the rice with a rice paddle to release excess steam.

Tips
- For freshly harvested rice (new rice), you can cook it right away without soaking.
Fresh rice already contains enough moisture. - For older, milled rice, it is strongly recommended to soak the rice for about 15 minutes before cooking.
Soaking helps the rice absorb water evenly and improves the texture.
